The Parent's Survival Guide to Beating the Heat in Rome (2026 Edition)

When the pavements are scorching, queues are long and the kids are running out of steam, having a few local tricks up your sleeve makes all the difference.

We always recommend exploring in the cooler morning and evening hours, then using the hottest part of the day for one of these family-friendly escapes.

1. Use Rome's drinking fountains like the locals do

Rome's famous nasoni are your best friend in summer.

Stop at every one you pass: drink, refill your water bottle, then splash cool water on your face, wrists and neck before carrying on.

For younger children, the fountains also double as a fun way to cool little hands and feet.

2. Discover Rome's shady side

Don't spend your whole holiday walking on hot pavements.

Just behind the Colosseum, Colle Oppio Park is one of our favourite places to escape the heat. With shady pine trees, playgrounds, a musical play area, a skate park and one of the best views of the Colosseum, it's the perfect place for children to let off steam.

And it's not the only one. Rome is one of Europe's greenest capitals, with beautiful parks dotted all over the city—so make the most of them.

3 Schedule cooling stops

One of our favourite family strategies is to plan a cooling stop every couple of hours.

Whether it's an artisan fruit gelato, a refreshing sorbet or an icy granita, everyone gets a chance to cool down before the next adventure.

Our favourite artisan gelato spots include:

  • Fata Morgana – Natural ingredients and gluten-free cones.

  • Otaleg! – Creative flavours and exceptional ingredients.

  • Gelateria del Teatro – Seasonal flavours made with fresh ingredients.

  • Come il Latte – Rich, creamy classics.

  • Giolitti – A Roman institution serving traditional artisan gelato.

Most people don't realise this, but Bar San Calisto serves one of Rome's best-value granitas. They're tucked away behind the bar rather than on display, so unless you know to ask, you'd never spot them. At around €1, they're one of our favourite ways to cool down in Trastevere.

4. Choose cool indoor adventures

Need to escape the afternoon heat? These are some of our favourite family-friendly indoor attractions.

  • Leonardo da Vinci Experience – Three locations across Rome, all good.

  • Explora Children's Museum – Rome's best-known interactive children's museum, with a beautiful purpose-built space and lots of hands-on exhibits.

  • Little World – Less well known, but one of our favourites for children aged 3–9. It packs in an impressive number of imaginative play areas and activities, making it easy to spend a couple of hours escaping the heat. (A little hard to find in the basement of a shopping centre but worth persevering!)

  • Game Over Escape Rooms – Solve the Da Vinci Code or uncover the Secret of the Vatican. English-language games available.

5. Explore Underground Rome

Rome's underground sites stay naturally cool, making them the perfect escape on a hot summer afternoon.

Our favourites include:

  • Basilica di San Clemente – Descend through three layers of history, from a medieval church to a 4th-century basilica and an ancient Roman street below.

  • The Catacombs – Miles of underground tunnels lined with early Christian tombs. Naturally cool and unlike anything most children have experienced before.

  • Domus Aurea – Step inside Emperor Nero's extraordinary Golden House. The vast underground halls are wonderfully cool in summer, and the optional virtual reality experience helps bring the palace back to life. (Open on selected days, so check before you visit.)

6. Cool off at a pool

If you're in Rome for more than a couple of days, consider swapping one afternoon of sightseeing for a swimming pool.

There are several family-friendly pools that are affordable and surprisingly easy to reach from the historic centre.
