Circus Maximus with kids: from empty field to roaring racetrack

At first glance, the Circus Maximus can feel like… nothing.
Just a long stretch of grass.
No towering ruins. No dramatic columns.

But 2,000 years ago, this was the loudest, most electric place in Rome — a vast racetrack packed with over 150,000 people, far more than the Colosseum could hold.

So how do you bring it to life for kids?

Start by helping them see it.

  1. Before you go, download and print the TrovaTrails charioteer card — designed like a modern-day sports collectible. It introduces a racer and invites kids to make choices — which team to support, what racing style to adopt — so they’re not just watching the race, they’re part of it.

  2. When you’re there, show them a short clip of a Roman chariot race fromBen-Hur.
Let them feel the speed, the danger, the noise…

  3. Then, standing in the arena, use a few simple prompts to spark their imagination:

  • Would you want to race… or watch?

  • What would be the scariest part — the speed, the crashes, or the turns?

  • Do you think the fastest racer always wins?

  • What would 150,000 people shouting sound like?

  • Where do you think the turning points would be?

Now they’re not just looking — they’re imagining.

And once they can picture it, this empty field comes alive with the roar of the race.
